Padang Besar

 Padang Besar is a shopping heaven and popular destination for Malaysians. Padang Besar is located in north Malaysia(Perlis) and the border town with Thailand.

 It offer open-air markets in the country. It is not as glamour as those high modern shopping center. Here,there are of lots stall that sells various goods at cheap prices. The goods sold here mostly are imported from Thailand.  

There are clothes, decorative items, home furnishing goods, game, leather goods and also food. However the tourist attraction here is the surely to the shops which sells branded imitation goods. Business hours going and out of the border is from 8.00 o'clock in the morning to 10.30 night for Padang Besar gate.

 Other than shopping, you can also dine here as there are lots of food stalls around.  

#1  'Pulut Ayam' which is a plate of sticky rice with fried chicken and its special chilli sauce. 

All only cost you RM4.

#2  Somtum is a classic Thai dish. Somtum is typically prepared three different ways. It can be “Somtum Thai” which has peanuts mixed in, “Somtum Bu” which has small pickled crabs pounded in, or “Somtum Lao sai pla ra” which includes the juice of pickled mudfish. Som tum is eaten as a snack as a salad.

Gua Kelam

Gua Kelam  is famous with cave walk. It was maintained by Perlis Forestry Department since 1997. It is a 370meter-long of limestone cave and located in a small town at the foothill. 

Gua Kelam is named in conjunction with its position and the all time darkness in the cave. It is located approximately 33 kms to north from Kangar. Access to the cave is by way of a suspension bridge.

  The length of the underground river is about 400 metres flowing  through the limestone range which can be seen when going through this cave. This underground river is a natural incident phenomenon. It was believed to be formed from the erosion of an underground stream. Electricity supply is also provided for visitors to enjoy the beauty in the cave.

Harum Manis

Did you know that Perlis produce the best mango in Malaysia??

Harum Manis is one of the main tourism products in Perlis. 

If we translate it to English, 

it means Harum = Aramotic and Manis = Sweet. 

Harum Manis is originated from Indonesia.  What makes this type of mango so special because it is only found in the state of Perlis. However, the season is only available from April to June only. So after this local season, the mango actually imported from our neighbour country, Indonesia.

Harum Manis generally as big as our palm. It is usually weight around 1kg each, which the price ranging from RM 20 to RM 25 per kg. Since this mango is one of the best mango in the world, Harum Manis is export to Japan, which the fruit become popular in Japan. This explained why Harum Manis sold in a premium price, hence not all the fruit can export to country like Japan and Singapore. Harum Manis can also be eaten with steamed glutinous rice + coconut milk. It is called 'Pulut Mangga'.

Sadly, this year Harum Manis wont be export to Japan and Singapore due rainy season which spoils the fruits. 

 This is Pusat Pertanian Bukit Bintang. This is where they produce Harum Manis  and other fruits.

Kuala Perlis #2

The busiest part of the town (Kuala Perlis) will be the jetty where passengers catch the ferry to the duty free Langkawi Island. As stated in the previous post, Kuala Perlis is one of the major departure points for the legendary Langkawi Island. It also has long been a major port linking Perlis with Langkawi, Penang as well as Phuket Island and other southern coastal Thai towns.

The journey to Langkawi Island from Jetty Kuala Perlis is only approximately 1hours 15minutes. Ticket price for adult is RM18 (one way) and RM36 (return) while ticket price for children (30-11 years old) is RM13 (one way) and RM26 (return).

Other than the departure and arrival halls there is nothing in the terminal building itself as other amenities are available just outside the terminal. 

During our visit to the jetty, we've noticed that there are constructions happening inside the jetty. The jetty is undergoing facility upgrades. This shows effort in improving the facilities, which allows better services in the future.

There are also some constructions outside the jetty. It is in progress building stalls kiosk.

 

However, the visit to Kuala Perlis would not be complete without taking a bite on some of their local food. There are lots of small food stalls and restaurants located near the jetty. One of the famous food there is 'Nasi Gulai Panas'.

The specialty here is we can choose fresh fish to be cook stew or fried. It is include with rice, 'ulam sambal belacan' and 'kuah gulai'.
